About Delta State
Delta State is one of the oil-rich states in the South-South region of Nigeria. Created on August 27, 1991, from the defunct Bendel State, it is bordered by Edo State to the north, Anambra and Rivers States to the east, Bayelsa State to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. Its western border meets with Ondo State.
The state capital is Asaba, located on the banks of the famous River Niger, while Warri is its commercial hub and one of Nigeria’s most active oil cities. Other major towns in the state include Sapele, Ughelli, Agbor, Udu, Oleh, Effurun, and Kwale.
People and Culture
Delta State is blessed with a rich cultural heritage and diverse ethnic groups. The main ethnic groups are the Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko, and Anioma (Igbo-speaking people). Each group has its unique language, traditions, festivals, and colorful attires. Popular cultural festivals include the Igue Festival, Owhoru Festival, and Okere Juju Festival.
The people of Delta are known for their hospitality, entrepreneurial spirit, and cultural pride.
Economy
Delta State is one of Nigeria’s major oil-producing states and plays a key role in the nation’s economy. Aside from petroleum and gas, Delta also boasts strong agricultural production with crops like cassava, yam, oil palm, plantain, and rubber. Fishing, trading, and craftsmanship also contribute to the local economy.
The state hosts several industrial establishments, shipping companies, and oil service firms. Warri Port and Koko Port are two notable maritime hubs that promote trade and transportation.
Tourism
Delta State is a destination for those seeking nature, adventure, and culture. Attractions include:
- The Nana Living History Museum in Koko
- The Araya Bible Site, where a copy of the Holy Bible is believed to have fallen from the sky

- Otuogu Beach, Ugbokodo Beach, and other natural waterfronts for relaxation
- The scenic River Ethiope, said to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa

Infrastructure
The state continues to witness infrastructural growth with expanding road networks, bridges, housing projects, and modern markets. Warri and Asaba both have functioning airports that connect the state to major cities in Nigeria.
